Rites of Passage at Home

Girls’ Rites is a 9 month intensive program for girls, where we:

  • Require each participant complete 60 hours of service learning

  • Cultivate a 3-tiered intergenerational mentorship team: each girl mentors a junior high school aged girl, and is mentored by an adult woman in the community

  • Train women mentors in ways to engage their mentee, while encouraging them to also simply “do life” together

  • Train girls in ways to engage their junior high mentee, while encouraging them to also simply “do life” together

  • Create space for exploration of self and current issues in a safe environment with two monthly seminars

  • Amplify girls’ voices by requiring student facilitation of 75% of seminars

  • Establish the girls on a lineage of womens’ rites via research on the history of rites of passage, feminism and women in community; engagement with texts by and about women; and ideation of the future of women in the world

  • Facilitate a local rite of passage along the front range of Colorado for girls unable to participate in the away rites
